That’s the latest prediction being made for Rockstar Games’ next major release.

Fans have had to wait awhile for it, but it appears the Red Dead Redemption 2 release date is locked in for October 2018.

And as you might expect, a lot of people are backing it to be a massive success.

It’s not hard to see why; the original Red Dead Redemption sold well on Xbox 360 and PS3, while RDR 2 will likely see a release on PC too in the future.

But while it’s all pretty good news for Rockstar, one analyst draws the line at Red Dead Redemption 2 surpassing GTA 5.

According to analyst Doug Creutz and the team at Cowen & Company, the new open-world Western game will sell well.

However, the chance of it beating GTA 5 is low, especially when you take into account that it’s one of the best selling games ever made.

Speaking with Market Watch, analyst Doug Creutz explains: “That’s not to say Rockstar won’t have other big hits—it may—but another ‘GTA V’ isn’t likely. Michael Jackson had a lot of hit albums but he only had one ‘Thriller.’”

“I think it’s a wild outlier,” Creutz adds on the subject of GTA 5’s success.

“I think maybe with the exception something Nintendo has made—Mario Brothers—but aside from that there’s never been a console game that’s sold so many units.”

Most of GTA’s continuing success is down to the game’s multiplayer mode – GTA Online.

This has seen new content released for it since it went live, and continues to bring people in.

It has proven so popular that Rockstar haven’t released new offline DLC for the game, which boasts a huge install base.

It was recently suggested that Rockstar are planning one major new GTA 5 Online update, before they switch their attentions to RDR2.

That would make sense as Red Dead Redemption Online looks set to be another massive project for Rockstar Games.

No new details have been released about it, but the development team have already confirmed that they have big plans in the works.

So while it’s fair to say that RDR2 probably won’t surpass GTA 5, RDR Online still has the potential to propel the new game to new heights of popularity.

It’s also worth pointing out that if Red Dead Redemption Online doesn’t prove popular with fans, there’s a chance that Rockstar will turn their attentions back to their prior project.

According to Yann2295, a new GTA Online content drop is being planned which could prove very big for players.

According to a recent post by the GTA insider, this next update will look to consolidate the many in-game businesses players can buy.

He also reports that this could be the final big release from Rockstar, with the drip-feed of content continuing until the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Yann also warns that while this is expected to be the final major update for GTA Online, there’s a chance that Rockstar’s plans have changed.

“Alright, so the basics of the next update; It’s supposed to be fairly big, and to be about the consolidation of all the in-game businesses (crates, cars, bikers, bunkers, smugglers, etc.) into one,” Yann writes.

“It might also be the last update, but we’ve heard that before, so take it as you want.

“Though the drip-feed of this one is supposed to end near the launch of RDR2, so who knows.”

Yann has a good track record of posting information before it’s been confirmed by Rockstar, so it’s worth taking note.
