A rare 50p coin has sold on eBay for £200 after its owner decided to sell their whole coin collection.
The seller, Samanderson121, from Stoke-on-Trent, said: “Well the time has come to pass on my coin collection that has been saved over the years.
“It is with great regret that I will be selling my coins, but my children have no use or nor do they wish to carry on with a collection.
“Therefore it’s time to pass on to a collector who would benefit and appreciate the coins as much as I have done.”
This rare coin is the rare Olympic swimmer 50p. The design shows a swimming moving through the water.
Early versions of this coin were printed with the lines depicting the water over the swimmer’s face. However, it was decided that the design was not clear, and so new coins were issued without the lines.
This coin is described by Royal Mint as: “A swimmer submerged in water, with the London 2012 logo above and the denomination, “50 PENCE”, below.”
It was designed by Jonathan Olliffe.
Another version of the coin was sold for £1,500 on eBay not to long ago.
Samanderson121 wrote: “I got this from East-Midlands Airport in2012, I kept hold of it not knowing how rare this was… until a few years ago!
“It’s probably the best coin I have to be honest! In fact I do not have this on show in my cabinet at all, I know that there are only 600 in circulation at present if I am right!”
The coin was sold for the whopping sum of £200, after one bid was made.
Other rare coin can be found on eBay by eagle-eyed coin collectors.
One rare £1 coin that is one of only 1000 was sold for £300 on the auction site.
The rare Trial of the Pyx coins are worth a lot to collectors. This coin was sold by user ‘270bhpastracoupe’ on Sunday.
A rare £2 coin also sold for a large sum at £295. The £2 coins were minted by Pobjoy, a small minting company known for creating commemorative coins.
This collection, issued between 1997 and 2000, depict the all 12 of the Labours of Hercules.
